William H. Meyers (1815 - ?) - His work was used for the 1977 Adobe Tour Poster, courtesy of the Bancroft Library.
Born in Philadelphia in 1815, William Henry Meyers went to sea in 1838 aboard a trading vessel to the West Indies. Soon, he joined the U. S. Navy and was promoted to the Warrant Officer rank of Gunner in 1841. He served on the USS Cyane in 1842 when Commodore Jones prematurely seized Monterey. Later during the War with Mexico, he was again in California as a gunner on the USS Dale. Due to ill health Meyers resigned from the Navy in 1847 and worked at the Naval Laboratory in Washington, DC. His work came at a time when military forces were widely scattered, and battles occurred among relatively small forces on widely separated battlefields. Thus, many of his works are depictions based on eyewitness accounts, as Meyers was not actually present at some of these events. None the less, he was for all intents the equivalent of a “combat photographer” during this era when even basic materials for watercolor painting would have been difficult to obtain. His depictions of the American conquest of California and gold mining activities are of great historical importance, and his work appears in significant collections such as the New York Public Library and the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, California. |
Jo Mora (1876-1947)
Jo Mora was born in Uruguay in 1876. He came to the United States as a child, studied at New York art schools, became a cartoonist on Boston newspapers, and nearly seventy years ago drifted into the Southwest, where for many years he lived a nomadic life as a cowboy, ranch hand, friend and student of the Hop and Navajo Indians. All the while he was active with pencil and brush, ranging over the entire West and preserving for posterity much of the romance and the lore of a now vanished era. One of the most versatile of Western artists, Jo Mora worked in many mediums. He illustrated numerous books, his paintings hang in many museums and his murals and sculptured groups adorn important public buildings all over the West. During his last years, he won added Rowen by his beautiful executed and historically accurate dioramas, perhaps the best known of which are the series depicting the life of his friend Will Rogers, done for the Will Rogers Memorial at Claremore, Oklahoma. Jo Mora's lifelong interest was the California Vaqueros, that hearty breed of missionary-trained horsemen who tended the immense mission herds for eighty years before the Texas cowboys appeared on our national scene. In "Californios", his last book, the author pays tribute to the daring and skill of those daring, hard riding pioneer cowhands bringing to light much fascination information about their method and equipment, their evolution from the wild Indians to the finished cowboys, their contributions to the economy of the province during the seven decades and their tremendous influence on the techniques of the cattle industry today, especially in California. |
Lucian Myron (1945 - ?)
The following bio information was provided by the artist. When approached by the Monterey History and Art Association to come up with a poster for the Adobe Tour in 1989 - it was quite an artistic joyance and privilege for me, an artist of little note having a studio from 85' to 93', right in the heart of Monterey's beautiful collection of adobes. The bright white washed wall and vermillion roof tiles accented by fuchsias, bougainvilleas, white lilies, and roses are the loveliest earthen structures in California. On sunny days I would paint in the outdoor garden patio of the Casa Gutierrez Adobe (circa 1836) with its intentional western exposure and some mornings I'd be inside upstairs, with its thick walls, in quietude, doing pen and inks, watercolors, and so on as the morning sun streamed in warming the room. I am still going but not in the Adobe Park. |
Earl Newman (? - )
This bio was provided by the artist: In 1960, I came to Venice, CA, with a wife and two kids in a ’55 Chevy station wagon, in quest of a future. It was the right place at the right time. Forty-fours years later, I am still a self-employed artist. I want to thank all the friends who have helped me along the path, and to thank Venice for being an environment that encourages the arts. Through the medium of silk-screen, also known as serigraphy, I’ve been able to reproduce my designs in volume, usually 100 at a time. It is like having 100 canvases on which to experiment, using different colors of papers and inks, varying the color blends as I go along. Thus, no two prints are alike. As an artist, I’ve been able to sell my work inexpensively, to communicate and share with others. Unlike mass-produced machine prints, each silk-screen print is made step by step, each color a separate printing. Besides doing nature prints, I’m also involved in music and theater posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Oregon Shakespeare Theater, Blues and Jazz Festivals in Southern California, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The Smithsonian’s Division of Musical History in Washington, DC, has recently acquired a complete collection of my numbered/signed edition of Monterey Jazz Festival posters dating back to 1963. Newman obtained a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art in1956 and a Graduate degree from Harvard University in 1957. Earl Newman has been living as an artist in Oregon since 1972. |

N.J. Taylor (1942 - )
This bio was specially written by the artist: From Miniatures to Murals As a multi media artist I have always tried to choose a medium that best expressed the content of my subjects. My drawing ability is always the foundation for my artwork. I was born in Helena, Montana and moved to NYC to study art in the mid 1960s. I studied at the Art Students League, the New School and was a medal winner and scholarship student at the National Academy. I began exhibiting my work in galleries beginning then. I lived in Greenwich Village and was also employed as a printed linen designer. I moved to Provincetown on Cape Cod in 1971 where I had my own Taylor Gallery for seven years before moving to California because I liked it here. Eventually after moving to the peninsula I found my way as an artist while sharing a studio space in Studio 15 at the Carmel Sunset Center. I began giving art lessons which led to numerous teaching and artist in residence grants in Monterey County. My growing interest in becoming an independent contractor for a variety of clients also led me to illustration contract work for numerous national educational publications. I had a long term contract with CTB McGraw Hill. My growing interest in the history and environment of the peninsula also created many opportunities for contracts and exhibitions including the one at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History featuring a extinct specimen they have in their collection of the Carolina Parakeet. My portrait was taken at this exhibition. I happily continue to create art of my own choosing and really enjoy creating miniatures for fund raisers. Collections: City of Carmel, Writer’s Museum, Edinburgh, Scotland, Silverado Museum, Silverado, CA, Monterey State Historic Parks, Monterey History and Art Association One of my reproduced commissioned artworks for Monterey State Historic Parks featuring Jules Simoneau and Robert Louis Stevenson playing chess in 1879 can be seen at the Simoneau Plaza in downtown Monterey. |
