James Clarence (J. C.) Anthony
J.C. Anthony was born in Iowa in 1875. He was a farmer (1917 farmed land that later became part of Ft. Ord); he was a general contractor; and a stage driver/maintenance man (maintained the stage between Carmel, Jamesburg, and Tassajara). He was also foreman (1919) of Andrew Molera's ranch at the mouth of the Big Sur River. J.C. opened the Mesa Tract in Monterey (1923) with the restoration of several old adobes. As a builder, he left his architectural mark using chalkrock (Carmel stone) for restoring old adobes.
J.C. married (1900) Edna Wright also from Iowa. The couple met in Pacific Grove at the annual summer Chatauqua. They had two children; J.C., Jr. and Edna Joy.
J.C. and Edna suffered through the Great Depression, multiple J.C. heart attacks, and in retirement moved to Los Arboles Road in Carmel Valley. J.C. died in 1949.
